Drafting a suitable child custody agreement

On Behalf of | Jan 20, 2023 | Child Custody |

When parents in Texas separate, they typically want to do all they can to ensure that their children are taken care of. One way to do this is by working together to create a suitable child custody agreement that serves both children and parents. Here’s some helpful advice for parents who want to draft an acceptable child custody agreement.

Be specific

One of the best ways for parents to protect their children, and each other, is to be as specific as possible when it comes to the terms of their child custody agreement. For example, include specifics about transitions and the days and times when each parent will have the children. Also, be sure to spell out what will happen when schedule changes occur. Set an appropriate notice period, like one day in advance.

Outline parenting roles

An appropriate child custody agreement should include the custody arrangement that both parents have agreed to, such as sole or joint custody. Be sure to also outline each parent’s role when it comes to making important decisions for the children. These may be decisions related to medical care or education. As the years go by and situations change, the custody agreement may need to be amended. Therefore, it is usually beneficial to include a clause that spells out how changes to the agreement can be made in the future.

If parents can cooperate and work together to create a suitable child custody agreement, they can usually save money and time. However, drafting such an agreement is not easy and can be confusing, especially when it comes to the laws surrounding child custody. Parents in Texas who need help or have questions can benefit by speaking with a family law attorney who is knowledgeable and understands the guidelines encompassing child custody agreements.
