Actor Nicolas Cage elects to pay child support for grandchildren

Once a relationship between parents sours, there are many legal issues to resolve, including the care and support of the children. It may be difficult for many parents to cover court-ordered child support payments. Texas parents who are struggling to meet these obligations may need to seek assistance through the family court system.

Recently, it was reported that actor Nicolas Cage has offered to help his son meet these expenses after an acrimonious split from his wife. According to the report, the actor’s son, Weston Cage, has been caught up in a bitter divorce from the mother of his two children. Though there were no details regarding how long the couple were married or what led to the divorce filing, it was reported that the former wife at one time had a restraining order against the younger Cage except for during court-ordered visitation.

Weston Cage has been ordered to pay family support in the amount of $8,000 until the end of the year. At that time, the payments will be converted to child support, though it is unclear whether the amount will remain the same. According to the media source, the payments will be provided out of a $16,000 monthly “gift” that the senior Cage pays his son. Both parties allegedly acknowledged that the payments from Mr. Cage are of a voluntary nature and can be stopped if the actor so chooses.

The younger Cage has visitation with his preschool-aged children, but legal and primary physical custody has been granted to their mother. Though the court specifies that child support monies are to be provided out of the gift to his son, the actor is not under any legal obligations. Texas parents likely do not have access to this type of assistance. Those who find themselves unable to meet their financial obligations to their children may seek the assistance of an attorney who can provide guidance in seeking a temporary modification.
