For co-parents, effective discipline requires consistency

On Behalf of | Oct 28, 2022 | Child Custody |

Following a divorce or separation, it is sometimes hard for parents in Texas to keep a civil relationship for the sake of the children. However, when parents put their past behind them and focus on healthy co-parenting, children can thrive. Staying consistent with discipline between households is a big part of creating stability and a healthy environment for the children. Here are some ways co-parents can stay on the same page when it comes to discipline.

Establish household rules

It’s likely that parents had household rules in place before they divorced or separated. Try to keep to the same pre-existing rules to avoid confusing the children. Keep in mind there will likely be occasions and situations where new rules need to be implemented.

Never vent to the children

If parents have disagreements with the rules they have set in their homes they should always discuss these things directly and never use children as messengers or outlets to vent. The past relationship is over, so parents should try to keep a business-like partnership. Remember, this is about the children now.

Just stay consistent

Consistency is the number one component to discipline. If both parents have different household rules, the children could become confused or try to take advantage of the situation, which may result in misbehavior. Parenting after a separation or divorce can be confusing. Luckily there is help readily available. Those in Texas who have questions or need assistance with any aspect of child custody could benefit by speaking with an experienced family law attorney.
