Child custody and shared parenting need both parent’s commitment

Texas parents who are considering divorce or who are in the process of getting divorced will likely have many concerns related to post-divorce parenting. Joint child custody and shared parenting seem to be gaining popularity because many believe it is in the best interests of the children to continue existing relationships with both parents by spending equal amounts of time with them. While we often read about high-profile couples committing to shared parenting after divorce, the success of such arrangements is seldom published.

Singer-songwriter Jewel recently provided some feedback on her and former husband Ty Murray’s shared parenting of their son Kase. After a marriage that lasted for six years, the couple split in 2014. Theirs was an amicable divorce, and they decided to share the parenting of the boy who was then about 3-years-old.

Jewel reported that although their split was without contention, navigating shared parenting has not been easy. The problems that led to the divorce do not miraculously disappear, and couples have to work hard to leave those memories behind and focus on the well-being of the child. Jewel said it is important for parents to understand that although it may be in the best interests of the child, shared parenting is not all plain sailing and requires commitment from both parents.

Any Texas parent who is considering divorce may have many questions and uncertainties related to child custody. Fortunately, help is available from experienced family law attorneys. A consultation with such a professional can provide the necessary answers. After assessing a client’s unique circumstances, the most appropriate route will be suggested. A lawyer may even suggest the assistance of a divorce mediator to facilitate negotiations between divorcing parents, which may lead to arrangements that will benefit both parents and children.
