It may be best to consider joint custody over loveless marriage

On Behalf of | Feb 3, 2014 | Child Custody |

Deciding to get divorced is an emotional and difficult decision to make, especially when there are children involved. Many Texas spouses remain in their marriage for the sake of the children. However, staying in a marriage in spite of bitterness and hostility can actually cause more damage to the kids than getting a divorce and arranging joint custody.

Spouses may not consciously recognize this, but those who are truly in a loveless marriage with each other may tend to feel resentment toward the kids. These feelings might occur because spouses may believe that the only reason why they’re still in the marriage is to keep the family together, but the relationship has deteriorated. As such, the hostility that parents have toward their spouses may end up being taken out on the children.

Additionally, children are even more miserable in a drama and tension-filled home. This is true for one man who said that he would favor spending time with his parents on a separate basis than to hear them constantly arguing. He further stated that kids can distinguish an unhappy marriage from a happy one, despite how well the parents believe to be hiding the conflict.

If discord is intense and on a constant basis, it may be beneficial for the kids and spouses to get a divorce. Parents generally want the best for their children, but it’s never a good idea to stay in a hopeless marriage. Doing this can actually cause children more despair than anticipated. Furthermore, it can also be in the best interest for Texas spouses to weigh their joint custody options in regard to a parenting plan to help promote a positive outlook for themselves and their children.
